Standing Up For Arts organized a great workshop taught by local artist Kirah Van Sickle. The 3 day workshop, Color 101, focused on all the richness and power of color. Through lecture, demos, and an
array of painting exercises, students gained greater confidence in color-mixing and improved using color relationships to enhance composition and impact. Check out some of the student work below from the workshop! (Photo credit: Kirah Van Sickle) Lori Taylor is the featured artist at the Sales Center until mid-August. Please read the writeup about her at http://www.stjamesplantation.com/artist-of-the-month/meet-artisan-lori-taylor. Here are some pictures from her work on display!
Thursday, June 22: Amidst the voice of Frank Sinatra belting out Come Fly With Me and a slide show depicting the early years of passenger aviation, a sold out crowd of more than 250 guests perused the travel related raffle prizes, the aviation memorabilia table and the Howie Franklin book signing table. Then the real show started. Guests boarded SUFA Air, buckling into their seats and listening to a hilarious flight safety video. While being entertained with humorous stories from retired flight attendants, passengers enjoyed "airline food" distributed by the flight attendants. An historical view of Wilmington International Airport and Piedmont Airlines was given by Pat de Barros followed and finally a very entertaining presentation from Howie and Linda Franklin, both stewards on Air Force One. Our audience was most generous in their raffle purchases and enabled us to raise significant funds for art scholarships and school grants! These monies will sustain Stepping Up For Arts through 2017. We would also like to thank all our volunteers and the gracious generosity of Linda and Howie Franklin. We hope to see you again at our next event on October 8th, when we present, "For Your Eyes Only", CIA Spies and their Families. The Artisans Gallery at the Marina hosts two more of our talented members for the month of June. Nick Noble is an outstanding photographer and Karen Maggiola is a brilliant floral artist, making a wide variety of wreaths and arrangements.
Nick Noble For many years, Nick has been interested in coastal landscape photography. Retiring from teaching quantitative economics and moving to St. James has allowed him to spend many hours with his photography interests. He has found the Brunswick County area to be an excellent setting to develop and refine his skills. The piers, sunsets, sunrises and seascapes are favorite topics for his photography. Often times, Nick returns to the same location but at different times of day and weather conditions to capitalize on the changes and then to try to understand how these differences influence the resulting picture. The move to St. James has also allowed Nick to develop an entirely new photographic interest: landscape astrophotography. This is photographing the stars and Milky Way, particularly in the late night and early morning. Three AM on a chilly, quiet late winter night with a camera, a cup of warm coffee and a sky full of stars has become his "happy place". Nick has enjoyed developing his own website, NickNoblePhotography.com, as well as his Facebook and Instagram pages that catalog his many photos. His work has also been featured in a number of local calendars and publications. Karen Maggiola Karen has always had a passion for art in many forms starting at a young age working with water color, pastels and pen and ink. An injury kept her from pursuing these passions so she turned to the art of creating beautiful designs with silk flowers. After years of making wreaths and arrangements for her friends, she decided to begin her own business so she could continue this passion. Karen enjoys designing her floral 'treasures' because it gives her the ability create an expression and vision using a variety of colors, textures and sizes. Each new project stimulates her artistic juices, making it possible to design her one-of-a-kind arrangements. She is always on the lookout for new floral stems and new, unique containers. Her arrangements, wreaths and mailbox covers are made to last: she wires all the pieces into the whole design and says this method is more secure than using glue. Karen also enjoys making smaller items such as fancy visors and hats and wine bottle/napkin ring decorations as well as ornaments/gift bag specialties. Karen is the creator behind the beautiful Christmas decorations at all the clubs, sales office and Tommy Thompsons. Please be sure to stop in to the Gallery this month to view the special displays each artist will have. The Wine and Cheese reception honoring these two wonderful artisans will be on Thursday, June 8th, from 4 - 6pm, at the Gallery. The next jury opportunity is Monday, June 5, 2017, at Barbara White’s home at 3882 Members Club Drive. 203-912-5177. Bring items to be juried to Barbara's house between 1-2 and plan to pick them up after 4.
Pat Bittenbender is the featured artist at the Sales Center until the end of June. Please read the writeup about her at http://www.stjamesplantation.com/artist-of-the-month/meet-artisan-pat-bittenbender/. Here are some pictures from her work on display!
Carol Kidd is asking again for your help in presenting the Festival of the Arts to our community. All art forms are welcome and encouraged to join. All you need to do is bring your supplies - painters paint, knitters knit, potters make hand-built products or bring a wheel, jewelers make their beautiful creations, sculptors sculpt, mosaic artists set their tiles, grout their pieces, you get the picture. The public is very interested in how you create, what it takes to produce a finished piece of fine art or fine craft.
The time for this event is 10-2 on Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28. It is usually the case that those artists who participate enjoy increased sales on those days. Please respond to Carol Kidd at carolskis@earthlink.net, or 253-3532. Carol is also looking for one more person to do a children's activity. Becky Clearly is offering her Faux Scrimshaw Workshop for the teachers of Brunswick County as a Continuing Education program on May 21 from 1 to 4 pm at the COMMUNITY Center. This is part of our Granting Program.
